This photo reminds me of the great book Dispatches by Michael Herr, a journalist (for Esquire, I think) who went to cover the war. Amazing book, beautifully written. GI
Uh....I dunno I might be wrong but I think this picture is backwards. M-16 usually has the forward assist and ejection port on right side of weapon. At least mine did. Righteous blog by the way.
