there's an interesting story behind this photo taken by walker evans, here in indianapolis. the couple in the photo was never IDed. this last summer there was a kerouck/evans exhibit at the art museum. they ran this photo in the newspaper as a feature for the show. a relative of the couple saw it and and after 40+ years names were finally known! the lady still lives here, the husband has since passed away. they had no idea they were in such an iconic photo!
Correction. That is not a Walker Evans photo. It is a photo by Robert Frank and first published in the US in 1959 in his book "The Americans." Killer classic that everyone should own. Kerouac wrote the intro for the book with a brilliant piece of writing.
One real important thing to consider with this image and Frank's book is that it shows a side of American culture that never got attention in the late 50s. The images along with the title (The Americans),coming from a Swiss born photographer were very controversial at the time.
