that's one of those spots where every photo was a winner. sheffey's backside blaster, ethan's tuckknee, scott bourne's 50-50 fs yanker and that cardiel photo which is amazing, but that phil shao is one of the greatest skate photos of all time, ogden shoulda' got an award for that one, it's perfect. i don't know what phil shoulda got for the trick, knighted maybe? rest in peace sir shao.
i remember when they put that railing in. a bunch of us rode the bus out there hit 33rd on the way and when we got there, we were all "WHAT THE FUCK!" its ruined! fort miley is ruined! then we started to figure out how to deal with it, a little. and i guess years later progression took care of it the rest of the way...
in the early 90's i lived at Mt Baker ski area, we lived in a big house filled with snowboarders. mike ranquet and jason loeb paid us to crash at our house whenever they were in town. one night we all went to a party, cardiel was with those guys, they called him 'cards'. anyhow, he got super shitfaced and barfed all over himself standing up, he was standing there on the back deck just barfing and letting it run down the front of himself. so later everyone came and crashed at the house. cards? no shower no "can i have a drink of water" no nothin, just lay down covered in puke and slept. they got up the next morning jumped in the car and drove to utah. as far as we knew he drove to utah covered in stale barf, we thought he was fucked! a little while later, that one picture came out of him doing a 540, padless, in a tshirt, on soaking wet masonite, while it was snowing. so, ya, he made it over the god damn rail! ive seen it, its 'doable'. never did it myself, never saw anyone do it, but i knew then, and i know now, its 'doable'.
I havent been to Ft. Miley but I do know how sick Cardiel is thats what makes him legnedary and skater of the century in my book. funny you mention him hanging with Ranquet and Roach they use to roll together all the time here in Utah, Cards was sick as fuck on a snowboard then he just stopped I thought that was rad, snowboarding was getting to fucking whats da word =gay.

short and pretty steep... no way to get that high... no way to get so fast and still in control with that run up.
